The most ridiculous job titles in digital marketing today?

There is a huge array of different skills that are needed for digital marketing, but does that justify these 8 job titles?

Digital Marketing is still rapidly evolving as a marketing technique; a new trend this year is a core technique next year. This uniqueness has its upsides... The community is always keen to share advice, and the rapid pace of change means there is a distinct lack of corporate stuffiness. Everyone has to be open to new ideas and willing to be flexible and always learning to keep their skills up to date.

However the need to be agile and open with digital marketing does come with a down side. The desire to be unique, stand out and appear to be down with the latest’s trends has led to a glut of ridiculous job titles that blights digital marketing.

I'm not going to name and shame those on LinkedIn who have opted for the quirkiest job titles, but all of these are real job titles. What is the quirkiest you have seen?

1. Digital Marketing Superhero

Digital Marketing Superhero

Clark Kent may have kept his superhuman attributes secret, but modesty clearly isn’t high on the agenda of people calling themselves “Digital Marketing Superheros”. My question is do different Digital Marketing Superhero’s have different super powers? Can some write content faster than a speeding train? Do others forge links with their social communities stronger than steel? Continuing this thought, what is the digital marketing equivalent of kryptonite?

2. Social Media Junkie

Social Media Junkie

This one is certainly unique; before writing this article I’d only ever seen one person with this job title, but some researched revealed there are plenty out there. I felt it worth mentioning for its sheer quirkiness. Does anyone actually want to be a social media junkie? And does using a slang term for addict really present the right impression of your skills? You don’t get accountants calling themselves spreadsheet addicts, or lawyers calling saying they just can’t wait to get another hit of that neat, sweet justice.

I wonder if these folks take their work home with them, are they mainlining Twitter after work, or smoking a cheeky bit of Facebook at the weekends?

3. Head of Happiness

Head of Happiness

I suppose ‘Human Resources’ just wasn’t hip enough for the folks who go into work every morning to make sure that the happiness team is running smoothly. This title is ridiculous but also brilliant. It can’t help but conjure up an image of a man or woman being asked at a rather dull dinner party what his job title is and replying ‘head of happiness’ only for every to insist he or she then get party going. Such an emotionally charged job title surely will only lead to problems. What do you do if your Head of Happiness is diagnosed with depression?

4. Chief sourcing Ninja

This job title takes the biscuit in sheer ridiculousness, but seems to be popping up across the recruitment world with increasing regularity. I’m not sure what the feudal mercenary traditions of ancient Japan have to offer the world of professional services, but apparently there’s something. Do they attend client meetings clad only in black robes? Or do is their primary method of identifying top talent clandestinely sneaking into corporate offices undetected with their legendary stealth? I certainly hope so, because if they are just making 100s of cold calls a day I’m not sure the ancient mercenaries would be too keen on having their name associated with them.

5. Digital Marketing Magician

Digital Marketing Magician

Digital marketers tend to enjoy blogging to share best practice advice, but I think these fellows might not be too keen on revealing their tricks. Do they conjure backlinks to improve SEO? Or can they pull organic site visits out of a hat?

I think this again reinforces the idea that there is something special about Digital Marketing; I’m yet to see a compliance wizard, or a logistics necromancer.

6. Marketing Rock star

Marketing Rockstar

Being a Marketing Rock star certainly sounds fun. I wonder if these people have a backing marketing band, or do they play all the instruments? Do they get into work and blast out a sweet content marketing solo and then play some chords catchy enough to generate a loyal brand following?

7. Brand warrior

Brand warrior

Brand warrior is another job title whose ridiculousness does not seem to have dampened its rise in popularity. How do these mighty crusaders fight for their brand? Do they slay their brand’s enemies with a sword crafted from negative PR campaigns? Are they warring for their Brand’s values? Or do they work remotely, conducting branded drone strikes from an office in Tennessee?

8. Growth Hacker

Growth Hacker

This job title is so popular it risks becoming widely acceptable. I don’t really have any problem with it so long as you are actually using digital to deliver spectacular growth, but I think as the term spreads it will increasingly be even the day-to-day marketing tasks being described as ‘growth hacking’. I once had someone who’s title was growth hacker tell me they didn’t know how to fill in a simple bit of HTML I sent them. Don’t call yourself a growth hacker if you couldn’t hack your way out of a wet paper bag.

Have you spotted any particularly silly job titles of late? Or do you love your unique job title and think I’m just jealous because I wish I was a Digital Marketing Superhero too?
